- ➤ A University of Idaho report shows that agriculture makes up 17% of the state's economy (amounting to $44.5 billion annually and supporting 138,000 jobs). East Idaho farmers face limited groundwater access due to a breach of a 2016 agreement that risks 500,000 acres of farmland. KLEW
EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ Lewis-Clark State College's spring enrollment increased 8.2% to 3,355 students + a 53% jump in dual credit enrollments drove growth in Humanities, Nursing and Health Sciences and Technical and Industrial courses. President Cynthia Pemberton said the boost strengthens early ties with local high schoolers to support workforce needs. Big Country News
- ➤ The University of Idaho will host a two-day Deep Soil Ecotron Symposium at the Seed Potato Germplasm Laboratory on Monday, April 6 and Tuesday, April 7. Researchers, farmers & industry leaders will tour the facility, attend short presentations, and enjoy a brass performance and guest lecture. Big Country News
ENVIRONMENT NEWS
- ➤ Due to severe storm damage and unstable terrain, the McGill Spur Access Site on the Clearwater River west of Ahsahka is closed until further notice. Crews are repairing the area, so the Chinook season opener on April 25 will not use this access — anglers should choose alternate routes. Big Country News
- ➤ Idaho Department of Lands (IDL) urges landowners to remove, burn or chip downed trees after a December winter storm to prevent bark beetle outbreaks. Pine removals should be completed by June 2026 and Douglas-fir and spruce blowdown by late winter 2027. Big Country News

- ➤ During Flood Awareness Month, the Idaho Department of Insurance urges homeowners to review their flood risk using FEMA's Flood Map Service and consider purchasing separate flood insurance to protect against costly water damage. Big Country News
- ➤ On March 19, a federal water infrastructure package allocated $30M to Lewiston Orchards Irrigation District to engineer a project that will pump Clearwater River water to Mann’s Lake for storage before distribution — moving the project closer to completion. KLEW
