- ➤ The Nez Perce-Clearwater Forest was chosen to provide the 2026 U.S. Capitol Christmas Tree, its first time sending the People’s Tree to Washington, D.C. Officials are selecting one tree from 4 million acres & planned stops let residents view it before being cut in late October or early November. KLEW
- ➤ The outdoor adventure expo kicks off today at the Nez Perce County Fairgrounds with over 60 vendors offering outdoor gear + a side-by-side show and shine set for Saturday from 8:30 to 10 a.m. Event coordinator John Roy said the expo welcomes new vendors and local outdoor enthusiasts. KLEW
EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ The Senate passed bills cutting almost half the funding for the online learning platform while largely keeping support for virtual charter schools intact+ the measures now head to the governor and House for review. Lewiston Tribune
- ➤ Lewis-Clark State College earned Gold Military Friendly School status for the third year in a row thanks to its strong veteran support. The college offers benefits assistance and a Veterans Resource Center (with free printing and computer access) on campus. Big Country News
ENVIRONMENT NEWS
- ➤ Lewiston received a $1.5M low-interest loan from the Idaho Department of Environmental Quality to study forever chemicals in wastewater — the city will install water mains in East Orchards and convert septic systems to a public treatment plan. KLEW
- ➤ Idaho Fish and Game began releasing more than 214,000 catchable-size rainbow trout to Clearwater Region waters starting yesterday; Lewiston anglers can fish at Kiwanis Park Pond (900 trout) and other spots, with Winchester Lake set to receive about 6,000 trout and Deyo Reservoir around 5,000 trout. - ➤ On April 1, 2026, Idaho Fish and Game announced that nearly 9,000 acres in Game Management Unit 5 were closed to public access due to repeated violations such as unauthorized trails, wood cutting, dumping, vandalism & theft. GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ The Idaho Senate passed a bill on Wednesday to restore Medicaid mental health services using one-time settlement funds to reinstate the Assertive Community Treatment program (which includes peer support services) after four patient deaths followed the cuts. The bill now heads to the House for review. Lewiston Tribune
HEALTH NEWS
- ➤ Lewiston’s largest hospital will be acquired by new management as part of a multistate deal that includes hospitals in Mississippi, Texas, West Virginia and Wisconsin. The full purchase is expected to finalize in the coming months with no planned changes to staffing and operations. KLEW
- ➤ TriState Health will welcome new provider Alishia West, FNP-C to TriState Family Practice, Clearwater on Tuesday, April 14. West brings extensive experience in maternal-child care and patient education and is accepting new patients. Big Country News
- ➤ A new AARP report finds that 400,000 Idahoans provide unpaid care for adults with an estimated 350 million hours of work valued at $6 billion annually. The report shows caregivers average 27 hours a week and would earn about $18.95 per hour if paid at market rates. KLEW
