COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The Upriver Youth Leadership Council was honored with the Champion for Children Award 2025 for its work preventing child abuse at the Family Fun Fair at the Lewiston City Library on April 3. Established in 2007, the organization has supported youth in Kamiah with programs like a Teen Center and a youth-led skate park — and will continue to expand its efforts to strengthen families.  Big Country News
  • Kamiah High School graduates from the class of 2018 launched Leaders of the Valley, a nonprofit scholarship program that will award $2,000 each year to a senior from Kamiah or Clearwater Valley for community service over academic performance—applications are due by 5 p.m. on April 18 and the program may expand to Lewiston-area schools with further support.  Dailyfly

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Tim Sperber has been a teacher and principal for 20 years and will lead the Lewiston School District as superintendent after Lance Hansen left for Kennewick. He plans to continue key programs like professional learning communities and hire an assistant superintendent—one new role in the district—to strengthen connections with students and parents.  Dailyfly

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Idaho Gov. Brad Little signed a bill on Friday increasing the budget for the Office of the State Public Defender—a statewide agency set up in October to consolidate county offices and address funding shortfalls. The bill adds $6.7 million to the 2025 budget and brings the 2026 budget to $83.2 million to boost pay for contract attorneys and contracted investigators in rural areas.  Dailyfly
  • Troy A. Shackelford was named the new air traffic manager at the Lewiston-Nez Perce County Airport—he worked with Serco Inc. in Colorado and served in the military—and he brings strong experience to lead complex air operations.  KLEW

HEALTH NEWS

  • Tri-State Health will host its seventh annual High Tea Glass Slipper-themed event Friday, April 11 at the Hells Canyon Grand Hotel to honor Joanne Shears—a longtime chief nursing officer—and to raise funds for a surgery center expansion and other hospital needs. Doors will open at 4 p.m. and the event, which features a fashion show, raffle, and dessert auction, will start at 4:30 p.m.  KLEW

  • Senior Alex Navarro won his second straight individual tournament at the SOU Spring Classic Tuesday while LC State tied for first but lost a one-hole playoff to British Columbia—the team will now prepare for the Cascade Conference Championships Apr. 21-23 in Portland.  Big Country News
