CRIME NEWS

  • A Clarkston man — 44-year-old Justin Starnes — was arrested Sunday on felony assault charges after allegedly attempting to strangle a woman, breaking her tooth and hitting her with his car while reportedly drinking; he is scheduled to appear in court tomorrow.  KLEW

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Rep. Jordan Redman revived his bill to check immigration status for help with items like vaccines and care as House Bill 135, which passed both chambers and was signed by Gov. Brad Little on April 3 — the law will take effect July 1. Lawmakers introduced at least seven immigration bills this session amid worries that these laws could hurt children's health care and lower crime reporting by unauthorized immigrants.  Dailyfly
  • The Idaho Secretary of State’s Office was honored yesterday with a national award from the U.S. Election Assistance Commission for its innovative work in election contingency planning — the office also received an honorable mention for its pet 'I Voted' sticker campaign during the 2024 elections.  Dailyfly
  • The Idaho Public Utilities Commission has scheduled a workshop on May 1 at the Athol Community Center from 6:00 p.m.—8:00 p.m. and a customer hearing on June 18 starting at 4:00 p.m. for Gem State Water Company’s application to raise rates by 53 to 79 percent; customers will see an increase of $21.65 to $27.65 on their monthly bills and written comments will be accepted until June 13.  Big Country News

  • During National Volunteer Month in April, the American Red Cross (a nonprofit that relies on volunteer donors) is asking people to give blood to keep supplies stable, especially needing Type O blood and platelets. Donation drives run through May 5 with free T-shirts for donors from April 14–30 and a $20 e-gift card plus prize entries for donors from May 1–18 (with one drive in Lewiston), so check your local schedule.  Big Country News

  • Two LC State track and field athletes finished among the top eight in the Cascade Conference decathlon on Thursday—Trenton Johnson earned 3,249 points with personal bests in the 400m and long jump while freshman Cameron Carrara secured seventh place with strong improvements in his events.  Dailyfly
