Good morning, Lewiston. Here's your local news at a glance for Wednesday, the 18th of June.

ECONOMY NEWS

  • A delegation from the Upper Mississippi Waterway Association will visit the Columbia-Snake River System next week, stopping at Bonneville Dam and several ports as part of a cross-country exchange to build unified support for inland waterway infrastructure. Representatives from Iowa, Minnesota, and Wisconsin will tour company vessels and join local partners — including port authorities and transportation firms — to discuss shared challenges and opportunities for America's commercial navigation systems.  Dailyfly

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Eight Lewis-Clark State Warriors earned CSC Academic All-District honors last season, with three from Warrior Dance + five from LC State Golf. Six of these honors were first-time awards, and they require a minimum 3.50 GPA along with meeting participation rules.  Dailyfly
  • North Idaho College started a new culinary arts sous-chef apprenticeship program — it works with local restaurants to give students real kitchen experience that goes beyond classroom learning. Students who finish the program will earn an Associate of Applied Science degree — they can then take the Certified Sous Chef exam, and applicants must have a high school diploma or GED plus six months of food service experience.  KHQ

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Idaho’s fire season is underway and is expected to be busy because a wet spring made a lot of grass grow that is now dry and ready to burn. A fire near Lewiston burned 250 acres early this month (with fire potential rising in July and August) and officials plan to add more detection cameras (and an improved lightning system) to help firefighters respond faster.  Big Country News
  • Firefighting crews are working on a 151-acre Post Fire in the Nez Perce and Clearwater National Forests near US-12 14 miles west of Powell Junction, with 317 personnel protecting the highway, hot springs, and recreation areas. Officials say drivers should not stop along the highway to watch the work—stopping may block emergency access and create safety hazards.  Dailyfly

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Schweitzer Engineering Laboratories is planning a hangar at Lewiston Airport for two corporate jets to avoid Washington State taxes and to base a new G600 aircraft—worth about $60 million—along with its already owned G550. City and county officials reported at a joint meeting on Monday that the airport faces a $660,981 budget deficit partly due to lost United Airlines service.  Dailyfly
  • Idaho Gov. Brad Little and the Idaho State Board of Examiners approved a $300,000 request Tuesday to reimburse state police for transporting convicted inmates who lack legal status—these individuals will be sent to ICE detention centers instead of returning to the community. The funding now clears the way for the first transports to begin and supports Idaho’s partnership with ICE for immigration enforcement.  Dailyfly

HEALTH NEWS

  • Washington State University’s Carson College of Business released a report on the Pacific Northwest health care economy. The survey of 1,006 adults in Washington, Oregon and Idaho found that 83% worry about senior care costs—65% see a caregiver shortage—and opinions on using AI in care are split.  Dailyfly

SPORTS NEWS

  • Coach Sydnee Soderberg had her interim tag lifted after leading LC State Dance to its first dual win, highest team score and the program’s first home contest, which earned three Daktronics NAIA Scholar-Athlete honors. She is now building Warrior Cheer — a new program set to launch its competitive season in 2026-27 — as local support grows.  Dailyfly
