🚨 Crime
Lewiston law enforcement is increasing DUI patrols during Hot August Nights to keep everyone safe—officers from Idaho State Police, Lewiston Police, and Nez Perce County Sheriff’s Office began patrols Thursday night and will continue through Saturday.
A 48-year-old man in Moscow was arrested on August 20 for unlawfully discharging a weapon and disturbing the peace after he barricaded himself at home — SWAT teams from several agencies responded to secure the area and take him into custody without injuries.
Charles Michael McClain, 40, from Spokane was sentenced to 20 year federal prison on May 6th after a federal jury convicted him of trafficking fentanyl and methamphetamine and illegally possessing a firearm following a search warrant executed on May 6th, 2024 that uncovered drug evidence and cash at his Riverton Avenue apartment—agencies including Lewiston police worked with the Quad Cities Drug Task Force in the investigation.
🎓 Education
University of Idaho research led by Professor Matthew Bernards and graduate student Adrienne Shea will be sent to the ISS to test a bacteria-resistant coating that aims to protect astronaut health.
The experiment will launch on Sunday, Aug. 24 at 2:45 a.m. Pacific time and remain in orbit for 30 days — with plans to adapt the technology for use in water systems on Earth.
🏥 Health
The Idaho Department of Fish and Game confirmed Epizootic Hemorrhagic Disease in a white-tailed deer in Game Management Unit 11 southeast of Lewiston—two additional animals are suspected of dying there.
Officials said the virus, spread by biting midges, has been reported in nearby units and that hunters can safely eat recovered deer while infected animals should not be consumed.
