COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Today in Lewiston, Advanced Home Health and Hospice of Northern Idaho announced a partnership with the Willow Center for Grieving Children—delivering a donation to support the center's Little Big Wagon fundraiser. The fundraiser will run from October 3 through December 14 to help families who have lost loved ones.  KLEW

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • The U.S. Forest Service reported that cooler, wetter weather will ease wildfires in the Nez Perce-Clearwater National Forests while heavy rains may trigger flash flooding on burn scars—leading to a flood watch for much of Idaho County. Fire managers reminded hunters and recreationists that closures could change quickly as conditions shift.  Dailyfly
  • Crews are battling the White Pine Fire northeast of Potlatch that has burned 792 acres so far and is 10% contained, with 220 personnel working to strengthen containment lines and secure access using heavy equipment and aircraft support. Gusty winds, low humidity, and incoming storms have challenged progress—Temporary Flight Restrictions are in place while the Sheriff’s Office maintains evacuation orders and trail closures.  Dailyfly

  • Idaho officials may use a new rural hospital fund from the One Big Beautiful Bill to help fund training for new doctors in rural hospitals and ease a local doctor shortage. The Idaho Medical Education Working Group met on Monday and will take public input online until Sept. 30—CMS will release more details next week and applications will be due in November with approval by Dec. 31.  Dailyfly
  • Bipartisan lawmakers including Idaho’s Rep. Mike Simpson reintroduced the Farm Workforce Modernization Act that would let immigrant farm workers apply for a special legal status—expanding visa opportunities and wage protection measures to help with farm labor needs.  Dailyfly

  • TriState Health’s Trauma Injury Prevention Program received a $5,000 grant from Clearwater Paper to supply proper carseats for families in need—boosting safety for children. It will partner with Lewis-Clark Early Childhood Program to distribute carseats that fit growing kids—ensuring protection for every ride.  Big Country News
  • Dr. R. Kim Hartwig, a Nez Perce Tribe member, was appointed Director of Strategic Initiatives for Indian Health Services at HHS and began her role on September 8—she brings years of expertise from her work as Medical Director for Nimiipuu Health on the Nez Perce Reservation.  KLEW
  • On September 16, over 700 cancer patients, survivors and their loved ones will gather in Washington, D.C.—joining the annual ACS CAN event—to urge Congress to maintain funding for cancer research and prevention. Gary Offerdahl from Lewiston will meet with Rep. Russ Fulcher, Sen. Jim Risch and Sen. Mike Crapo to press lawmakers to back cancer research and early detection measures and extend health care tax credits for Idahoans.  Big Country News

  • LC State Women’s Golf placed third at the Walla Walla Invitational and coach Zach Anderson said the players fought back after a tough start—Jane Barry tied for third with a 3-over round of 75, and the team will compete at the Northwest Iowa Invitational Sept. 15-16.  Dailyfly
  • At the Walla Walla Invitational, the No 19 LC State Men’s Golf team finished third after Sondre Andresen led with a fourth-place finish in a field of 50 golfers—coach Zach Anderson said the team struggled with cold putters but still gained a solid start. The team shot 291 in the final round and will return to the Valley for quick fixes before heading to the Northwest Iowa Invitational on Sept. 15 and 16.  Dailyfly
  • The University of Idaho will celebrate the 50th anniversary of the P1FCU Kibbie Dome this Saturday as the Vandals host the Utah Tech Trailblazers for their first matchup at 1 p.m. — special activities will honor the Dome and its football history.  Dailyfly
  • LC State Volleyball recorded its best season start since 2010 with a 3—1 win over Walla Walla on Tuesday as the team reached a 6—0 record in Cascade Conference play; coach Katie Palmer said the strong middle attack, led by Karissa Lindner, helped secure the victory and they will host Warner Pacific this weekend.  Dailyfly
